Air Quality Alert issued July 17 at 4:40PM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a Code ORANGE Air Quality Alert Saturday for the Baltimore City Metro and Annapolis region. Concentrations of fine particulate matter due to wildfire smoke will persist at levels consistent with an Air Quality Index of Unhealthy (Red Alert) to Very Unhealthy (Purple Alert) Friday night into Saturday morning. Air quality begins to improve Saturday afternoon. Code Purple and Code Red Air Quality Alerts mean that air pollution concentrations within the region are unhealthy to very unhealthy for the general population. A Code Orange Air Quality Alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors. Marine Weather Statement issued July 18 at 3:21AM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC The areas affected include... Chesapeake Bay from Pooles Island to Sandy Point MD... Chesapeake Bay from Sandy Point to North Beach MD... Chesapeake Bay north of Pooles Island MD... Chester River to Queenstown MD... Eastern Bay... Patapsco River including Baltimore Harbor... At 320 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated strong thunderstorms, capable of producing winds to around 30 knots and small hail. These thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 11 nm west of Fort Smallwood State Park to near Mayo, moving east at 20 knots. Locations impacted include... North Point State Park, Magothy River, Chester River, Dobbins Island, Pooles Island, Greenbury Point, Gunpowder River, Sandy Point State Park, Highland Beach, Severn River, Thomas Point Light, Parsons Island, Fort Smallwood State Park, Pinehurst, Hart Miller Island, Gibson Island, Bodkin Point, Tolchester Beach, Worton Point, and Love Point. These strong thunderstorms will likely produce localized winds up to 30 knots, and could pose a serious hazard for boaters. A special marine warning may eventually be required if these storms continue to strengthen. Boaters should consider heading for shore before these strong thunderstorms arrives.
